Springfield Fire & Life Safety is the recipient of numerous awards for excellence including recognition as the best Emergency Medical Services system in the nation in 1985. The department initiated several state and national programs and has a national reputation for being the first in the nation to introduce new technology. In 1989, Fortune magazine listed Springfield as one of the top 10 safest communities in which to live for people with heart conditions. In 1996, Springfield was included as one of 10 sites for the National Institute of Health’s Heart Attack React program and beta site for development of the Commission on Fire Accreditation International, forerunner of the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
