Memorial Hermann Life Flight and Dr. Red Duke

Memorial Hermann Life Flight made its first flight on August 1, 1976. Led by Chief Medical Officer Dr. James “Red” Duke, the program was only the second of its kind in the nation. Fire Chief L. O. “Whitey” Martin, who was in charge of Houston’s newly-founded EMS services, approached Duke, who was in charge trauma services at Hermann Hospital, about the possibility of a civilian air ambulance program. The idea stuck. Since its inaugural flight, the crew and fleet of Life Flight have undergone many changes, but their goal remains the same.

This program was also the primary test-bed to the DREAMS telemedicine technologies. DREAMS was successfully deployed on-board these operations as a part of the Texas A&M Academy for Advanced Telecommunications and Distance Learning headed by Larry Flournoy and Bob Arnold.
